Your car ages like you do. You see it every day, so you miss the gradual fading.
I’ve watched this pattern repeat countless times in my detailing business. Owners bring me vehicles with irreversible damage, asking if I can restore them. Often, I have to turn them away.
The damage has gone beyond what detailing can fix. They need a spray painter or panel beater instead.
In West Australia’s harsh climate, particularly around Perth, this deterioration happens faster than most people realise. Perth’s intense summer sun and year-round UV exposure from our unpolluted skies starts attacking clear coat immediately.
But it’s bird droppings that deliver the killing blow. The acid eats through clear coat and paint within hours, causing permanent damage.
Most people think they have days or weeks to clean it off. They don’t.
Even protective coatings only buy you a few extra days. Without protection, your vehicle can fade within 3 years under constant Australian sun exposure, especially in Perth’s Mediterranean climate where vehicles face relentless UV bombardment.
When I explain this damage timeline to clients, they get that familiar look. The “ahh, yes I know what that is” moment.
They’re remembering their previous vehicle. The fading. The peeling clear coat. The trade-in value that disappointed them.
Suddenly they understand they could have gotten more for their last vehicle, making this one cheaper in turn.
The numbers tell the story. Minor correction starts around $300 but can reach $1800 for a whole large car. If panels are beyond repair, you’re looking at $700+ per panel.
I had one customer with a Lexus here in Perth. The dealership gave him a low trade-in price, probably fair for the condition. We performed a $600 detail before he sold it privately.
He got an additional $6000.
That 10x return perfectly illustrates what vehicle owners lose when they don’t protect their car’s appearance from day one. Well-maintained paint retains up to 10% more value than damaged surfaces.
Here’s what concerns me most. Many car buyers get their first protection experience at dealerships, where inexperienced teams rush through applications.
When that protection fails, it creates skeptics who think all protection is worthless.
The real tragedy isn’t the industry’s reputation. It’s the cost to unsuspecting car buyers who get sucked in by after-sales promises, then watch their investment deteriorate.
Vehicle protection packages are hidden insurance. They protect against the gradual value erosion that standard policies ignore.
Your shiny new car becomes just transport over time. Until you want another shiny car and realise what the first one cost you.
