I measure paint thickness on new vehicles every day. The numbers reveal something dealerships never mention.
Your brand-new car’s paint is roughly half as thick as vehicles from 20 years ago.
We used to commonly measure 120 microns of total paint thickness on new cars. Today I’m finding measurements below 70 microns consistently.
That’s a reduction of nearly 50%.
Manufacturers don’t advertise this change. Car buyers want cutting-edge technology at competitive prices.
To deliver both, manufacturers cut costs wherever possible. Thinner paint and clearcoat layers save massive amounts globally.
I call it the “shrinkation trend.” Every micron saved multiplied across millions of vehicles equals enormous cost savings.
But it leaves you with paint that’s inherently more vulnerable.
Modern automotive paint systems have dropped from 130-150 microns in the early 2000s to just 95-125 microns today.
The clearcoat, your paint’s primary defense layer, suffered a 20% reduction from 55 microns in 2002 to just 44 microns in 2022.
Here’s the brutal reality: there’s little opportunity to remove scratches due to the thinness of modern paint.
Traditional paint correction is essentially off the table. One aggressive polishing session could burn through what little clearcoat you have.
A single panel respray costs in excess of $500. A full respray runs north of $5,000.
But here’s what makes it worse: you’ll have a freshly painted panel next to used panels. The colour match is never perfect.
I see the most common mistakes on road vehicles where owners save money on protection but end up with poor-looking vehicles within months.
Unprotected vehicles get dirtier easier and harder to clean. This requires more effort, which creates more micro scratches.
It’s a downward spiral that starts immediately.
Off-road enthusiasts underestimate damage potential. Just getting to the beach takes you down tight tracks.
That screech of a branch running down the side of your car. Getting out to see your lovely new car with pinstripes down it.
I’ve seen $100,000 4WD’s get the paintwork destroyed by a single trail ride because owners thought they’d “be careful.”
I see protection as insurance for your paintwork.
Paint Protection Film installation ranges from $2,300 for our Bushwrapz advance sides-$7,000 for full coverage. Professional ceramic coating typically costs under a $1,000 for a short term coating up to $1700 for full Graphene infused ceramic
These numbers seem high until you face that first $500 panel respray.
PPF offers 5-10 years of protection against both physical impacts. Ceramic coatings protect against environmental and last 2-5 years.
The cost comparison favours protection over correction every time.
Recovery depends on damage severity. We offer free inspections to assess what’s possible.
But prevention beats correction with modern thin paint systems.
The key insight: your new car’s paint is more vulnerable than any vehicle in automotive history. The question isn’t whether damage will occur, but when.
Protection isn’t an upgrade anymore. It’s essential maintenance for preserving your investment from day one.
